What is the CORE Program?

The Conservation and Outdoor Recreation Education (CORE) program is the mandatory training for new hunters in British Columbia. Completing the CORE Program (including passing the exam) makes you eligible to obtain a Fish and Wildlife ID (FWID).

This program, created in cooperation with the British Columbia Wildlife Federation (BCWF), ensures students gain the knowledge required to pass the license exam and the skills required to hunt safely and ethically.

The course consists of nine modules:

  • Module 1: Conservation

  • Module 2: Ethics

  • Module 3: Laws and regulations

  • Module 4: Outdoor survival and safety

  • Module 5: Firearms safety

  • Module 6: Animal identification

  • Module 7: Bird identification

  • Module 8: Indigenous peoples and hunting in BC

  • Module 9: Freshwater fisheries

What to Bring

To challenge the CORE exam, bring two pieces of government-issued identification.

Exam Fees

  • $30 for the written exam

    and

  • $30 for the practical firearms handling exam

If you bring your Canadian Firearms Safety Course Report, you do not need to pay $30 for the practical firearms handling exam.
